got a big 'ole in the Maxxis Detonator on my Boardman commuter bike.  It's done ok – got upwards of 1500 miles out of it and the other one is still going fine.

anyway, so anyone want to recommend what I should replace it with?  gets used 50/50 on roads and canal towpaths, just want something cheap, quick and puncture proof.  oh yeah, and available in 700×28.

links to cheap places to buy v welcome…

bloody hell that's cheap.  28 size in stock?

got the 23 rubinos on my fixed gear, no problems thus far.  want something bigger and more comfy for my commuter as I ride along the canal and some fairly awful road surfaces each day.

Randonneur if it's geared. Gatorskin if it's fixed.

Have had a Bontrager Hardcase on front of one bike for over a year and it's been good. Not good for rear fixed though apparently (via PJ).

Rubinos are worth buying the pro version if it's for fixed rear as they are double the price but last well over twice the time of the regular.( But they're 23 max? so not what you're looking for)

something made of solid steel; with a wire casing, no rubber at all; just woven metallic thread. or perhaps a wooden tyre, made of ebony or some sort of dense tropical wood; perhaps mahogany or teak. although the latter might cause dead-spots, it could work.

Uuum… Thanks pj, I will research your suggestions. However I think you may have misunderstood my requirements, I can see where you're coming from with the choice of construction, sadly I am limited by the availability of tyres made from such materials and the need for a certain amount of grip currently only provided by rubber :-)

Noddy,

I have a couple of Vittoria Zaffiro pro tyres in white, They have skidding wear on one, and a bit dirty. They came on a wheelset I just bought. £5 for the pair if you want?

yeah, got one of thoese randonneurs in the end – pretty cheap.  the reflective strip is either a good thing or hideous, depending on your tastes.  i don't mind it.  seems a decent tyre, although not really ridden it much yet.

the rubinos i have on my fixed gear seem good though – i don't skid at all mind.
