So I've been lurking here for a bit whilst building up my first fixed – definitely a beater, but built from scratch :)

Ideally I need to replace the cranks for shorter ones and the front wheel for a 700C because on my test ride I kept catching my toes – eek!

Superb – truly sticking to the good old fashioned cheap and functional ethos. I had that exact frame until recently, a 700c on the front is golden with a deep drop caliper (47-57mm), I drilled the fork crown out to take a modern recessed bolt shimano jobbie.

When Suzi and I were flat hunting we went to two places where guys had shoe collections that made George's look fairly modest. Like a hundred fucking pairs or something crazy – there wasn't room to keep them in boxes.

The final irony is that the 'sneaker' obsession in men that so closely mirrors the stereotyped female obsession with shoes was born of that bastion of sexual equality… the hip-hop scene!

I lived with someone who had his trainers stored in loads of full black bin bags, piled up half filling the spare room he had so many. Most had only been worn once or twice. He was a young advertising director. I was skint at the time and couldn't work out how he could spend so much on them. He got us all loads of free food (mainly fridges full of cheese) from the ads he worked on.

anyone who's ridden with me lately (and hence had to wait around while I fix yet another puncture) will be glad to see I've finally ditched the knackered supersonics for some slightly bling white rubinos….
