As some of you know i bought / won an old re-built, striped down single speed racer (built by the Bristol Bike Project) back in the Spring – background article

Now due to heavy use and well leaving it out in the rain a tiny bit (when at work) it's peugeot frame has a little bit rusty

So i've taken the opp to strip it back down, wirewool down the surface rust and re-protect it against the elements with some magic spray.

Here's the bike just before i took the thing apart:

While taking it apart the rear brake guides (top tube of the frame) have worn through i'm now looking for any advice on how I should go about finding / making replacements.

I'm aiming to keep the weight down as much as possible the key to the "rusty rockets" new look is going to be striped b2b silver, black & red.. (toying with the idea of red brake cables or chain to add a little bit more red).

The simplest method would be to grind down the remains of the current guides and whack some  – http://www.wiggle.co.uk/p/cycl…..360007956/ – but these seem a tad cheap for my desired look.

Any sites / providers that offer some nice chrome / steel, guides that i could then weld / solder on to the frame?

I'm currently toying with getting some new rims and a new / shorter handle bar, but i'm quite attached to the old skool vintage italian drops

Some people have advised me to skip it and buy a new one but i've kinda got attached to it's charms.

It is possible to get metal cable guides. Can't remember the exact name for them (cable stops?) but sure I've seen them on the SJS site or somewhere. Or run full length outers and remove the exisiting guide.

Or, yes, convert to fixed and remove back brake?

Found these, not very pretty but would do the job I guess…

Shame no one makes pretty guides that can just be attached to the frame for older frames which don't have the required Braze Ons.

Ordered my red-brake cable this morning along with some Any40 t's random!

Cheers PJ..

I've come up with a idea,  not sure why i didn't think of it before. Planning on welding some 12 swg (6mm) Aluminium / chrome Tubing sections prob about 8-10mm sections to the frame  & pass my new red brake cable through that.

Failing that i'm gonna go small cable, zip ties as you suguest

Might even get the brake guides engraved with a decal although this might be like  "polishing a turd".

Damn!

Update:

Finally got to the stage where i'm ready to finish off the frame.. it's all sanded down looking lovely now i need to protect it.

It's a toss up between Crystal Clear Matt & and gloss protective spray

Do you guys have any recomendations for what's best for protecting the frame from the elements while still keeping it's lovely silver shine?

Andy.

New to this thread, but in terms of keeping the frame healthy and shiny, I used this with my old steel MBT frame:

http://www.muc-off.com/shop/pr…..

It is not a long term solution, as it needs to be re-applied, but only every other month or so, and after each soap wash. It's oil based, and forms a non sticky film over the frame, leaving it water proof, and gives it a lovely shine. Just thought I would mention it as it would make a nice short term solution.
